Even as her music reaches new listeners and her name begins to circulate beyond her immediate circle, Rachel Black says the reality of being an artist has not fully settled in.
The emerging R&B singer is still adjusting to a life shaped by faith, creativity and a debut project rooted in personal truth.
Black recently released Pieces of Me, a project she describes as a reflection of her spiritual journey and lived experiences. The new project was released in August, and it marked a significant milestone for the artist, who says the music helped guide her through a difficult period in her life.
Spirituality and faith were solely at the center of her artistry and was also a vital component for the singer as she navigated through difficult transitions in her life.
The rising artist explained that the project directly reflects her strong relationship with God.
“Talking about my relationship with God, that’s really what helped get me through that hard time in my life.” Black said.

While the release of the highly anticipated project has brought increased visibility, Black said she is still processing what it means to be recognized as a professional artist.
“I still feel like this is a dream. Every day I wake up or every time I do something like this— have an interview or anything—I’m like, ‘Huh? This isn’t just a dream anymore. I’m really an artist?’” Black shared.
That sense of disbelief is paired with intentionality. Black said she is actively involved in shaping her sound, noting that many listeners may not realize how hands-on she is with her vocal work.
“I put together most of my vocal arrangements,” she said, pointing to a level of creative control that reflects both discipline and self-awareness early in her career.
Musically, Black draws inspiration from the era that shaped her love for R&B. She credits 90s music as a lasting influence.
“I grew up on 90s R&B, and I think it shaped me as a singer.” Black said.

The singer also elaborated on her dream collaborations as these influences have inspired her artistry as well. She noted that the late Aaliyah would be her top choice, citing the singer’s legacy and sound.
The singer also notes Destiny’s Child’s The Writing’s on the Wall as a project that still has her hype and singing along to every track featured on the album.
As she continues to perform, Black approaches live shows with a focus on vocal care. She said she avoids eating before performances due to nerves and vocal strain, opting instead to drink water and eat lightly throughout the day.
“I can’t eat everything because it messes with my voice and my stomach,” she said. “I’ll wait until after a show to eat, just so my voice is nice and clear.”
Being recognized for her hard work, dedication and talent is a motivational factor for Black, as well as receiving a stamp of approval for her 2023 album 2090 from the renowned record producer and songwriter, Timbaland.
“I was shocked, and I was scared when I sent him some of the songs to listen to. Timbaland is going to be honest with you if he doesn’t like your music,” Black said. “But, he was vibing with my music. He loved my voice, and he is my ideal producer to work with.”
