Black Excellence Is The New Wave: Ebony Hosts Power 100 Gala Honoring Legacy & Lifework
On Tuesday night, Nov. 4, in Beverly Hills, EBONY hosted its 80th annual Power 100 Gala, filling the room with talent and versatility from entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, changemakers and so much more.
This event held significant magnitude and is the true definition of Black excellence. Even during brief moments of silence throughout the celebration, the power and impact of those in attendance spoke volumes.
Kicking off the night, American comedian and actress Robin Thede took center stage as the host. Thede is known for her entertaining jokes and ability to effortlessly make a crowd laugh. For this event, it was no different as she brought a familiar energy as she entertained throughout the night.
Thede established an atmosphere that highlighted the importance of Black people having a space to celebrate and commemorate achievements, while also recognizing the significance of the Power 100 Gala.
This year’s honoree list showcased that not only do trendsetters, innovators and legends make history, they also redefine and shape what culture looks like.
Former NBA superstar, entrepreneur, businessman, sports analyst and philanthropist, Shaquille O’Neal, was awarded the Junior Bridgeman Entrepreneur of the Year Award. O’Neal has demonstrated that his ability to inspire, impact and improve the welfare of others exceeds basketball courts and hoops. His courageous and generous spirit has directly and indirectly impacted many lives.
In an acceptance speech, O’Neal addressed how much being honored by a Black publication means to him.
“Being recognized by a publication that celebrates Black excellence, culture, and leadership for a generation truly means a lot. This award means a lot because it carries the name of Junior Bridgeman,” O’Neal explained.
American singer, actress, dancer and songwriter, Teyana Taylor, was also given her flowers at the Gala. Presented with the Entertainer of the Year Award, Taylor thanked God and gave him all the credit.
“God is the author and he is the mediator. God was the one who wrote my story before I even knew I’d be standing here tonight,” Taylor said.
The talented artist has had a standout year. Recently starring in the movie One Battle After Another, releasing a 22-track album, and even helping other artists with their choreography, Taylor has been consistently working on and off the sets and studios.
Supermodel, muse, blueprint and trailblazer, Iman was this year’s recipient of the Icon Award. Celebrated for her contributions to the fashion world, Iman has been in the fashion industry for over 50 years and has stood as the face of many designer brands.
While many know this next legend for her character, Joan, or even for her character as Rainbow Johnson, Ebony is recognizing Tracee Ellis Ross as Pathbreaker of the Year.
Ross has created a new way of representing Black women on television through hit shows like Girlfriends and Black-ish. Her characters go beyond stereotypes of Black women and bring a refreshing, smart, motivated and powerful woman to the big screen.
Ross has also created a new way to represent Black women in the beauty space. As founder, owner, and co-CEO of Pattern Beauty, Ross dedicates her products to women with curly, coily or kinky hair.
The pathbreaker has redefined beauty standards and increased the number of products specifically designed for women of color.
While accepting her award, Ross gave some important advice to the audience.
“Do not wait for something or someone to experience what’s possible for your life. Dream big and intentionally work hard to make those dreams come true,” she said.
Her advice to the audience was a reminder not to let doubt, fear or other obstacles stop the journey to greatness.
Others honored at the Gala included humanitarian Lonnie G. Bunch III, celebrated for his lifelong work in education, culture and compassionate service.
Love Island star Olandria Carthen, honoree of the People’s Choice Award for her rapid rise to fame, being a fan favorite and her dedication to shifting the direction of black culture.
As if the night couldn’t get any better, R&B singers Lucky Daye and Ari Lennox separately graced the stage with their strong vocals and elegant stage presence. Lighting up the crowd with excitement and good vibes.
From sports to entertainment, this year’s Power 100 Gala demonstrated that Black excellence continuously shines through.
While celebrating and recognizing greatness, Ebony also celebrated a milestone of its own. This year’s gala marked 80 years since Ebony Magazine was established.
Created by John H. Johnson, Ebony launched its first publication on Nov. 1, 1945. A day that permanently marks the embodiment of Black excellence.
Always capturing the significance of Black people committed to high achievements, Ebony has amplified voices and shone a light on excellence.
Decades later, their mission remains true, uplifting Black culture and moving Black people forward. This year’s Power 100 Gala, hosted by Ebony, consistently commemorates success and reminds Black people of their power and impact.
