For many Zillennials and Gen-Zers, weekends were synonymous with the sounds of animated adventures and laugh tracks, especially when Kyla Pratt graced the screen.

Whether it was Penny Proud navigating adolescence in The Proud Family or Breanna Barnes up to something on One on One, Pratt became a cornerstone of childhood for an entire generation of young Black viewers.

Recently, actress Loren Lott and singer-actress Jazmine Robinson made sure that Pratt received her well-deserved flowers. In a heartfelt tribute posted on Instagram, the two women honored the actress, quite literally crowning her while a life-size cutout of Penny Proud sat behind her, symbolizing the cultural icon she’s always been.

In the Instagram video, Pratt is seated with a life-size cutout of Penny Proud positioned just behind her—a nod to her iconic animated role. Lott and Robinson stand beside her, playfully and lovingly placing a crown on her head as part of a tribute to her cultural impact. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, joy and celebration. Pratt appeared visibly touched by the gesture, smiling warmly and soaking in the moment as the ladies cheered her on.

Born and raised in Southern California, Pratt began acting at an early age, quickly securing a place in Hollywood’s growing wave of Black talent. She rose to prominence through her leading roles on the Disney Channel’s The Proud Family and UPN’s One on One

Her career continued to flourish with starring roles in the Dr. Dolittle franchise and memorable appearances in films like Love & Basketball, Fat Albert and Hotel for Dogs.

Pratt’s ability to portray relatable Black girls and teens—girls who were smart, funny, vulnerable and empowered—resonated deeply within the Black community. Her characters reflected the real-life experiences of young Black girls, navigating identity, family, friendships and first love.

In a media landscape that often lacked representation, Pratt's work helped fill that gap and did so with grace, joy and authenticity.

Her roles were more than entertainment; they were affirming. They told young Black girls, "You are seen." For many, she was the first example of a character who looked and spoke like them, confident and unapologetically Black.

While many child stars fade from the spotlight, Pratt gracefully transitioned into adulthood with a renewed focus and purpose.

She’s continued acting in projects that carry meaning, including Lifetime’s Let’s Meet Again on Christmas Eve, and the indie film A Secret She Kept, which centers on mental health in the Black community.

The latter explores the stigma surrounding therapy and emotional vulnerability, offering a powerful message about healing and support.

Outside of acting, Pratt is just as passionate about her philanthropic efforts. She advocates for children and teens' mental health and encourages young women to embrace self-love, confidence and ambition. She has long used her platform to motivate and uplift, becoming a steady voice for change and wellness in the Black community.

Motherhood is another deeply meaningful part of Pratt’s life. As a mother of two daughters, she often shares the joys and lessons of parenting. When she’s not on set, Pratt finds peace in simple pleasures, cooking, writing, and advocating—all part of her commitment to protecting her own mental well-being.

Though her impact has long been felt, the recent tribute by Lott and Robinson was a touching reminder that Kyla Pratt’s influence remains powerful and relevant. The actress appeared visibly moved in the video, smiling through emotion as she embraced the moment.

Her flowers might be arriving a little late, but now they are blooming and will continue to be watered.
